FRIENDS IN ST HELIER

Social groups for Merton's over 50's

Our aim is to provide support, dignity. respect, promote health, wellbeing and encouraging independent living.

Friends In St Helier (F.I.S.H) was founded in 1982 to support the Good Neighbours Scheme, a government initiative. The founder’s aim was to have volunteer wardens in every street of the St Helier Estate to provide information, help the vulnerable, sick, handicapped and housebound. Registered as a charity in 2010.

These aims still drive how F.I.S.H operates, addressing inequality experienced by people over the age of 50. Emphasis is placed on reducing the social isolation of the disadvantaged elderly people living in Merton and to increase their wellbeing.

F.I.S.H now operates four days a week. It provides six safe, warm, and welcoming clubs where users can eat and socialise. Membership encompasses all the locally represented ethnic and religious diversities.

We Provide low-cost services to ensure accessibility and equality to the diverse community of older people.

A key objective is to encourage members to identify the activities that will keep them independent and active.
